RS232 Framing Errors

Framing errors mean the receiver cannot consistently interpret character boundaries under the selected baud, data-bit, parity and stop-bit configuration.

Read the corruption pattern

Every byte wrongLarge baud mismatch, inversion or wrong electrical interface.
Some ASCII recognizableClose baud rate, wrong framing or clock drift.
Errors at long runs/high loadClock tolerance, buffering, noise or signal integrity.
Parity errors onlyParity mode/data-bit configuration mismatch.

Evidence sequence

  1. Verify RS232 voltage levels and signal ground.
  2. Measure bit timing or decode a passive waveform.
  3. Test full framing combinations offline against repeated known patterns.
  4. Compare both directions; endpoints may be configured differently.
  5. Inspect cable length, grounding/noise only after logical settings are proven.

Use baud detection, traffic capture, pinout diagnosis and the pillar.

Provide raw waveform/capture, port settings, error counters and cable/environment details.
