Stabilize operations
- Preserve known-good system images, installers and dependencies.
- Back up databases and test restoration.
- Record configuration, licensing, devices and spare hardware.
- Control updates and test them outside production.
- Isolate unsupported systems from unnecessary network exposure.
- Monitor disks, services, backups and scarce interfaces.
Know the exit threshold
Virtualization is useful only when drivers, dongles, timing and devices remain compatible. Maintain a written recovery procedure and periodically rehearse it. Plan migration when recovery time, security isolation, hardware scarcity or change demand becomes unacceptable.
